UAA men’s basketball team adds another shooting guard

A junior college transfer from California is the fifth new player to join the UAA men’s basketball team.

AJ Garrity, a 6-foot-3 guard, started all 61 games during a two-year career at Santiago Canyon Junior College. He averaged 10.6 points per game as a freshman, took the next season off because of an injury and came back to average 13.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game as a sophomore.

He shot 41.2 percent from 3-point range last season while earning Orange Empire Conference first-team honors.

“With our graduation losses, we needed another big wing who can shoot at an elite level, and AJ is a perfect fit,” UAA coach Rusty Osborne said in a release from the school.

Garrity, who is from Huntington Beach, California, is a fifth member of UAA’s recruiting class and the third guard. He joins true freshman Isaiah Moses, a 6-0 guard from Dimond High, and three other transfers — 6-2 guard Tyson Gilbert of Colorado State-Pueblo, 6-9 forward Vojtech Ruzek of Utah State Eastern and 6-4 forward Hunter Sweet of Concordia-Portland.
